Slip and fall accidents can cause a variety of injuries to Michigan residents. One of the most common that can occur is a traumatic brain injury.

What is a traumatic brain injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious head injury that affects the brain and causes a variety of effects. The injury can occur when a person suffers a sharp blow or jolt to their head. Often, blunt force trauma from an accident or an intentional act of violence leads to a TBI. These injuries can be mild, moderate or severe, but even a seemingly mild concussion can adversely affect a person.

Anyone who suffers a TBI should seek immediate medical attention.

Who is most vulnerable to TBIs from a slip and fall accident?

Older adults 65 years and over and children are more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury from a slip and fall accident. However, anyone can sustain this catastrophic injury from a slip and fall if they hit their head.

Why do slip and fall accidents happen?

Slip and fall accidents can occur for many reasons. Slick, slippery surfaces on floors or the pavement outdoors can lead to a fall. Uneven or broken sidewalks or stairs, poor lighting and loose floorboards, floor mats and rugs or carpeting can also lead to a person losing their footing and suffering a fall that could cause them to hit their head and suffer a TBI.

Even objects littered on the floor or in any walkway that are unseen can lead to a slip and fall accident. Elderly people are more susceptible to falls when they suffer from certain medical conditions. For example, dementia and osteoporosis can both cause an unsteady gait and lead to a tumble.

TBIs can result in myriad symptoms. Anyone who experiences continuous headaches, blurred vision, nausea, concentration and memory problems or loss of consciousness should seek medical care. With prompt treatment, it’s more likely to get better.
