Traumatic brain injuries are more common in Michigan than some people think. They can also be a major cause of disability or even death.

What is a traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a catastrophic type of injury that can be caused by either a severe jolt to the head or an object penetrating the skull. TBIs can adversely affect the normal way that the brain functions and can be mild, moderate or severe. The milder form and most common of this injury is a concussion, which can also range in severity.

What causes TBIs?

Serious car accidents are one of the leading causes of TBIs. However, the elderly and children are more susceptible to developing this type of injury from falls.

Some traumatic brain injuries develop as a result of high-contact sports such as football, soccer or boxing. Acts of violence and intentional self-harm can also cause TBIs.

How do TBIs cause disability or death?

As recently as 2020, around 64,000 people died from traumatic brain injuries. People of all ages can develop these injuries, but certain groups are more likely to experience them than others. Those who are in abusive relationships and suffer domestic violence are at high risk. Members of the military and veterans are also more likely to develop the injury.

People of color and unhoused individuals experience a higher risk of TBIs. Prisoners and detainees in correctional and detention centers are also more likely to develop these injuries. People who live in rural areas are at a higher risk as well. All of these groups are not only at a higher risk of developing TBIs, but they are also more likely to become disabled or even die as a result of them.

If you have suffered a TBI, it’s important to seek medical attention. The effects of these injuries could be devastating especially if they are left untreated.
