Michigan readers may not be aware that unintentional injury is the top cause of death for Americans between the ages of 1 and 44. These deaths happen in a number of ways, including through accidental poisonings, house fires and falls. However, car accidents claim the most lives by far.

Federal statistics show that over 32,000 people are killed in car crashes every year. In recent years, that number has been even higher. Studies show that most motor vehicle accidents are related to human error. This means that most victims die in preventable accidents caused by drunk, distracted or reckless drivers. Some victims also die because of their own choice not to wear a seat belt. Luckily, there are several simple things drivers and passengers can do to reduce their risk of becoming a government statistic.

First, all vehicle occupants should wear a safety belt each time they go for a drive. In addition, babies and toddlers must be placed in age-appropriate car seats. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children under the age of 2 be placed in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat. Traffic safety experts also implore drivers not to text or talk on their cell phones while operating a vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 3,450 people were killed by distracted drivers in 2016. Finally, drivers should avoid speeding and never drink or use drugs before getting behind the wheel.

An attorney may be able to help a car accident victim obtain compensation for their injuries. By using crash reconstruction reports and other evidence, legal counsel could prove a negligent driver was responsible for the crash. This could result in a settlement that covers medical expenses, pain and suffering and more.
