Weather Channel faces lawsuit over fatal crash with storm chasers

Michigan residents may know that the two stars of the Weather Channel’s “Storm Wranglers” were killed in a car crash back in March 2017. In addition, another life was taken in that crash, that of a 25-year-old storm spotter employed by the National Weather Service. Now, the mother of the victim has filed a wrongful death suit against the Weather Channel. She is seeking $125 million in damages.

The show’s two stars were speeding down a highway near the city of Spur, Texas, in pursuit of a tornado when they ran a stop sign and collided with the jeep driven by the 25-year-old. All three were killed on impact. The chase had been live streamed on the Weather Channel’s Facebook page right up until the crash put an end to the broadcast.

The storm-chasing duo had long been known for their history of reckless driving. Text messages between several other storm chasers and one of the show’s producers allegedly express concern over the stars’ driving behavior. The lawsuit alleges that the Weather Channel, far from doing nothing about it, actually encouraged such behavior for the sake of getting more exciting footage.

If not for this negligence, the lawsuit claims, the fatal accident could have been prevented. The Weather Channel, for its part, has declined to comment.

When it comes to wrongful death, a family member of the decedent or the executor or administrator of the decedent’s estate may be able to file the lawsuit against the responsible party. If successful, the claim could reimburse the plaintiff for funeral and burial costs, pre-death medical bills and loss of support. It may be wise to have a lawyer assist, especially with the gathering of proof and negotiating for a settlement. If negotiations fail, the lawyer may prepare for litigation.
