IT PAYS TO BE SAFE

No. 26, July, 2010
COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY ANALYSIS 2010
(CSA 2010) AND ITS APPLICATION TO DRIVERS

Drivers of commercial motor vehicles throughout the United States have been hearing a lot about something called "CSA 2010." Usually if you speak to a driver, they think this is something that simply affects their company when it comes to being reviewed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The truth is--it is going to have a dramatic impact on drivers. Drivers under CSA 2010 will be subject to an individual analysis known as BASIC (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories).

Drivers will be subject to analysis under seven critical criteria, including:

  • Unsafe driving
  • Fatigued driving
  • Driver fitness
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Cargo loading and securement
  • Crash experience

Utilizing these seven criteria, each driver will be scored. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will then address these behaviors by intervening with the carriers that are using unsafe drivers. Ultimately, a driver can then be found unemployable by a motor carrier.

Now more than ever, compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, whether it relates to hours of service, drugs and alcohol, cargo securement or vehicle maintenance have got to be at the top of a driver's priority list as violations will not only affect the company, but can affect your ability to continue in the profession of being a commercial motor vehicle driver.
